I've Seen Wonders: Reflections on Life's Moments
Introduction:
Life is a tapestry woven with experiences, each moment a thread that adds depth and color. Recently, I found myself reflecting on the extraordinary and everyday sights that have shaped my journey. Inspired by a rare snowfall in Louisiana, I wrote a poem titled "I've Seen," capturing snapshots of my life. In this blog, I break down each part of the poem, sharing the stories and emotions behind these moments.
I've Seen
I've seen volcanoes at rest,
From the Philippines to Italy,
Their silent strength humbling me.
I've seen dolphins on a Guam sunset, swim in sync,
A fleeting dance at twilight's brink.
I've seen the wintry days of Delaware accumulate ice and snow,
A frozen world where whispers grow.
I've seen the Statue of Liberty with her torch held high,
A beacon of hope against the sky.
I've seen the Vietnam Wall, so solemn and still,
A testament to sacrifice, courage, and will.
I've seen many things, though I haven't seen it all,
Yet today’s snow reminds me how small wonders still enthrall.
"I've seen volcanoes at rest, / Their mighty peaks in calmest jest, / From the Philippines to Italy, / Their silent strength humbling me."
Volcanoes hold a unique place in nature—both beautiful and fearsome. In the Philippines, I marveled at the tranquil majesty of Mount Mayon, its near-perfect cone standing against the sky. In Italy, Mount Vesuvius whispered tales of its ancient power. These moments remind me of life's paradox: even forces capable of destruction can exhibit profound serenity. Observing these giants at rest taught me humility and the importance of respecting nature’s strength.
"I've seen dolphins on a Guam sunset, swim in sync, / A fleeting dance at twilight's brink."
Guam’s sunsets are a masterpiece of color, and witnessing dolphins glide through the waters was like watching nature’s choreography. Their synchronized movements against the backdrop of a setting sun spoke of harmony and grace. In that moment, I felt connected to something larger than myself. It reminded me of the fleeting beauty in life and the importance of being present to appreciate it.
"I've seen the wintry days of Delaware accumulate ice and snow, / A frozen world where whispers grow."
Growing up in the South, snow was a rarity, but living in Delaware introduced me to winter’s quiet magic. The way ice crystals clung to tree branches and snow blanketed the world in silence was mesmerizing. I remember walking through a park, the crunch of snow beneath my boots, and feeling as though time had slowed. These winters taught me to find beauty in stillness and to listen to the whispers of the world around me.
"I've seen the Statue of Liberty with her torch held high, / A beacon of hope against the sky."
Visiting the Statue of Liberty was an emotional experience. Standing before this iconic symbol of freedom, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunities I’ve had in life. The statue’s steadfast presence reminded me of resilience and the importance of holding onto hope, even in challenging times. It’s a testament to the dreams and sacrifices of so many who came before us.
"I've seen the Vietnam Wall, so solemn and still, / A testament to sacrifice, courage, and will."
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is more than a wall; it’s a place where stories of sacrifice and bravery come to life. Standing before it, I was overwhelmed by the weight of history and the names etched into the stone. Each name represents a life, a story, and a family left behind. It’s a powerful reminder of the cost of freedom and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
"I've seen many things, though I haven't seen it all, / Yet today’s snow reminds me how small wonders still enthrall."
Life’s grand moments are unforgettable, but it’s often the small wonders that leave the deepest impressions. Watching snow fall in Louisiana, where such sights are rare, I felt a childlike sense of awe. It was a reminder that beauty can be found in the most unexpected places and that joy often comes from appreciating the here and now.
Conclusion:
Each line of my poem reflects a chapter of my life, a moment that left a lasting impression. From the grandeur of volcanoes to the simplicity of snowfall, these experiences have shaped my perspective and reminded me of life’s beauty. As I continue this journey, I remain open to the wonders still waiting to be seen. What moments have shaped your story? Take a moment to reflect and appreciate the beauty in your own life’s tapestry.
