About Me

Welcome to It’s Worth Your Wage.

Hi, I’m Todd Matherne.

This blog is built around one simple idea: helping people take ownership of their mindset, their finances, and their direction in life—especially when starting over or rebuilding feels necessary.

A little over a decade ago, I found myself starting from scratch. That experience forced me to rethink how I approached setbacks, responsibility, and long-term growth. Over time, I turned that reset into a foundation for personal and financial progress.

Today, I write about the lessons I’ve learned through real-world experience in career development, financial growth, discipline, and the mindset shifts required to move forward when life doesn’t go as planned.

A core influence in my thinking is Stoicism—the idea that while we cannot control external events, we can always control our response. That principle continues to shape how I approach challenges and long-term goals.

Through this blog, I aim to share practical reflections and lessons that can help you move forward in your own journey, whether you're rebuilding, growing, or simply looking for a clearer direction.

My goal is simple: to help you make each stage of life more intentional—and more valuable.

Thank you for being here.

A Moment of Silence: Embracing Stillness in a Chaotic World

#10 - 7/24/2024 A Moment of Silence: Embracing Stillness in a Chaotic World We've all been encouraged to pause for a moment of silence, often during solemn occasions. But what if we could harness the power of stillness in our everyday lives? The Magic of the Present Moment A moment of silence isn't just about reflection; it's a gateway to the present moment. By detaching from the past and future, we can fully immerse ourselves in the here and now. A Serendipitous Discovery Recently, I stumbled upon the transformative power of silence. While tending to daily tasks, I found myself drawn to the window, captivated by the rhythmic patter of rain. As I focused on the gentle sound, my mind began to quiet, and a sense of peace washed over me. The Art of Mindfulness This experience opened my eyes to the practice of mindfulness. By simply observing the world around us, we can cultivate a deeper connection to the present moment. This mindful state can be achieved through various tec...

From Discipline to Meaning: The Next Chapter

#49 - 01/9/2026 From Discipline to Meaning: The Next Chapter For years, I’ve challenged myself with a simple but unsettling question: What should I be doing with my life? On paper, things look solid. Over the last six years, I’ve lived with more discipline than at any point since my military days. Financially, physically, professionally—I’ve stayed focused. I’ve set goals, executed plans, and built systems that work. Retirement is no longer a vague idea; it’s a clear north star. And yet, beneath all of that progress, there’s been a quiet, persistent feeling that something is missing. Not failure. Not regret. Just… absence. The Strange Feeling of “Enough” Not Being Enough This is a strange place to be. Discipline teaches you to measure progress—numbers, milestones, checklists. When you hit those targets, you expect satisfaction to follow. But for many of us in our late 50s and beyond, it doesn’t arrive the way we thought it would. I’ve noticed something else, too. When I was young...

How to Turn Nothing Into Something—and Change Your Life

11 - 07/28/2024 How to Turn Nothing Into Something—and Change Your Life You don’t always get something for nothing—but you can transform "nothing" into something truly valuable. That's the foundation of It’s Worth Your Wage and the first success principle: start where you are . Below, I’ll share powerful quotes and insights from Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich and Joel Osteen to inspire your journey. I’ve been broke, stuck, and unsure where to start. But one truth changed everything: you don’t need a lot to begin—just the belief that you can. Turning nothing into something isn’t a cliché. It’s a mindset I practice every day. From flipping $5 items to building a blog, here’s how I took action when all I had were ideas. Imagine the Possibilities It all begins with a thought—an idea or spark of imagination. A single thought is like a pulse of energy that moves through your mind, setting things in motion. As Hill and Osteen emphasize, "You have to believe it befor...
